A Simple Geometrical Model for Solid Friction

چکیده
We present a simple model for the friction of two solid bodies moving against each other. In a self consistent way we can obtain the dependence of the macroscopic friction force as a function of the driving velocity, the normal force and the ruggedness of the surfaces in contact. Our results are discussed in the context of friction laws used in earthquake models. PACS numbers: 46.30.Pa 81.40.Pa 05.60.+w † on leave from C.N.R.S., France

A Simple Geometrical Model for Solid Frictiont
We present a simple model for the friction of two solid bodies moving against each other. In a self consistent way we can obtain the dependence of the macro-scopic friction force as a function of the driving velocity, the normal force and the ruggedness of the surfaces in contact. Our results are discussed in the context of friction laws used in earthquake models.
متن کاملEffect of confinement on dense packings of rigid frictionless spheres and polyhedra.
We study numerically the influence of confinement on the solid fraction and on the structure of three-dimensional random close-packed granular materials subject to gravity. The effects of grain shape (spherical or polyhedral), material polydispersity, and confining wall friction on this dependence are investigated. In agreement with a simple geometrical model, the solid fraction is found to dec...
متن کاملSolid like Friction of a Polymer Chain Typeset Using Revt E X
We propose a simple friction model for isolated polymer chains on a solid substrate. The chains are pulled at constant velocity by one end, the other end can be trapped on the solid substrate on localised sites. We focus on the energy dissipation due to the traps. This simple model leads to non trivial friction laws, depending on the velocity and the distance between traps. Some refinements of ...

متن کاملSensitivity Analysis of Coulomb and HK Friction Models in 2D AFM-Based Nano-Manipulation: Sobol Method
Nanotechnology involves the ability to see and control individual atoms and molecules which are about 100 nanometer or smaller. One of the major tools used in this field is atomic force microscopy which uses a wealth of techniques to measure the topography and investigates the surface forces in nanoscale. Friction force is the representation of the surface interaction between two surfaces an...
